Gig Review:Acoustic Routes, Yaza Cafe, Nelson September 2023
"Jacquie Walters’ last appearance at Yaza was pre-Covid. She has, nevertheless, been hard at work, recently releasing her 4th album ‘The Forest’. Jacquie said she had decided to focus, for this concert, on songs that are attached to memories. Her early musical memories include her Dad singing at bed-time ’ The Banks of the Ohio’ being one of several favourites that she grew up with. Tonight, she sang it for her Mum, watching from the audience. Jacquie’s father also wrote songs, and recorded ‘Pacing the Cage’ (Bruce Cockburn’s 1996 lament ‘about being stuck’). Being part of a musically active household saw Jacquie recording a Dylan song at age 6, and writing her own songs from a young age.
"On a recent evening run at Lake Rotoiti, Jacquie became geographically embarrassed and decided staying put until it was light was her best option. She listened to many different sounds in the dark, including the night birds giving way to the day birds as light began to steal back into the skies . She described ‘Breaths’ as reflecting her idea of active listening to everything and ”in all dimensions “. ‘Papatuanuku’ was inspired by a walk in the Abel Tasman park.
"Jacquie spoke about her idea of ‘companion songs’ the ones that stay with you for life, such as Dylan’s ‘Make You Feel My Love’ - which she sung beautifully! She went on to include several well known covers in her song list (not all acknowledged here). ‘Vincent;’ was dedicated to her Mum who was in the audience watching her perform. Other songs that will never age were - Donagh Long’s 1993 ‘You Will Be The Light’ and Joan Baez’s (Dylan song) – ‘Don’t Think Twice’ . Chuckles burst out as she described the discomfort for both of a chance sighting of her past partner in the supermarket . He was the muse for her one and only revenge song ‘New World’.
"Jacquie’s song ‘Under the Waterfall’ is becoming a favourite of mine. I really enjoy its gentle and light feel. For the encore, Jacquie chose the thoughtful, with a hint of wistful, ‘Love is Our Cross to Bear’ from American songwriter and performer, John Gorka (who is maybe not heard often enough in Aotearoa).
"An evening listening to Jacquie perform was definitely one well spent!"
